Inspiration

Swiss brand Bold launched its first bike back in 2015 with a frame that was as clean as a glacial stream and a hidden shock that was better protected than a Geneva bank vault. With a single showroom in Beil, it remained an exclusive proposition, but in May 2019 Scott Sports bought a majority stake in the boutique brand, which allowed it to use the patented Internal Suspension Technology. Then, a year later, Scott launched a new Spark XC bike with, you guessed it, a hidden shock.

The bike we tested is a special build so we will be focussing our review on the frame itself only. The Bold Linkin is available as a frameset and a complete bike. The complete bikes come in a total of 4 different configurations. A ‘Pro’ and an ‘Ultimate’ spec are available in both 135mm and 150mm travel options.

BOLD CYCLES has just released its brand new bike, the LINKIN, and if its internally mounted shock wasn't crazy enough, it gets a super progressive geometry and the ability to switch from 135mm of travel up to 150mm with the change of a link. That's not all as it comes with a tonne of on-bike storage and a flip chip. Here's everything you need to know.

The BOLD LINKIN is offered with either 135 or 150 mm of travel, which can then be changed by the inner link. Four versions will be available, which differ in frame travel set-up and build specifications. Integration and handling are the key features on this innovative and technology driven, premium trail bike. The LINKIN will be available in 39 international markets.

The new Bold Linkin is a trail bike offering either 135 or 150mm travel, adjustable through the hidden shock, and takes inspiration from the latest Scott Spark. Most noticeable is the integration of the shock into the frame, sitting just above the bottom bracket and anchoring to the inside of the down tube, along with in-built storage for emergency tools (or the ‘save the day kit’, as Bold calls it).

Bold Cycles’ uniquely integrated, hidden-shock Linkin trail bike is back, with an all-new virtual pivot point suspension layout with updated progressive geometry and the ability to adapt rear wheel travel to your style of riding. Plus, its new horizontal shock layout inside the carbon frame lowers the bike’s center of mass once again, making the rear shock seem to disappear even more, yet easier to access at the same time.

As you might expect, Bold is continuing to use the internal shock design, however there are some big differences to its application on the new bike. Rather than standing vertically in the seat tube, the shock now lies horizontally above the bottom bracket. This gives Bold a low center of gravity that other brands could only dream of achieving and, it claims, also boosts the stiffness of the overall construction. As before, the shock is protected from the elements but is now accessed from a removable panel in the bottom of the downtube, rather than below the bottom bracket as before. A magnet-equipped travel indicator on the outside means you don't have to break open the bike to check the sag or know if you're bottoming out or not. Re-orienting the shock also means the seat tube is clear of any obstructions and a 200mm dropper post can be fitted.
